C.A.P.S.U.L.A: the CSSD concept of the future

The C.A.P.S.U.L.A. (Central Automated Process for Sterilization Units in a Lean Activity) project implements an innovative transport system, fully automatic and robotised, for surgical instruments and medical devices.

The prototype is based on the logistical handling of a container active in the washing and sterilization process (the capsule – advanced capsule), which itself becomes the chamber of the CSSD. By means of AIV (Automated Intelligent Vehicle) connections and handling systems, and with the aid of anthropomorphic robots, the C.A.P.S.U.L.A. containers go through the classic reprocessing procedure in a single environment. This difference is significant compared to a traditional CSSD, which is usually divided into 3 areas (dirty area, clean area, sterile area): the sterilization capsule occupies a totally different space. The C.A.P.S.U.L.A. project totally redesigns the CSSD: spaces and processes change, a new, safer, more standardised operating experience is offered. Medical Waste Treating 4.0

R&D project aimed at the creation of an innovative automated system for the treatment and ennobling of medical waste in an End-of-Waste perspective.

  • Project implementation period: 2020-2022
  • Total project budget: € 2,898,129.18

Waste treatment 4.0.
The end-of-waste solution for infectious medical waste

One of the highest costs for hospitals from a financial and environmental point of view is determined by the treatment process of medical waste.
In Italy, the numbers are high: we are talking about an average annual production of almost 150,000 tonnes, which has practically doubled since the Covid-19 pandemicThe management and disposal of this enormous quantity of medical waste therefore becomes a complex, hazardous and also expensive procedure. It involves locating large storage areas and organising numerous transports to treatment facilities. This has an impact on costs and on the environment.

Cisa’s Waste technology solutions already address these issues, and the Waste treatment 4.0 project looks beyond by taking into account some current trends:

cestino

recent regulations on medical waste have provided the opportunity for a smart management by making it subject to the legal regime of municipal waste if properly treated and sterilised on-site

biohazard

the sterilisation of hazardous medical waste must be as widespread as possible and preferably carried out on-site

cycle

the medical waste treatment processes of the future in a circular economy aim at the production of new high-value products through differentiation and ennobling of medical waste.

Cisa Group’s Medical WasteTreating 4.0 (MWT4.0) project goes beyond the conversion of medical waste into a less hazardous class and the use of sterilization as a treatment method for infectious risk, and represents the next radical revolution in management processes. Medical WasteTreating 4.0 is an integrated medical waste treatment and ennobling in an end-of-waste perspective, consistent with the principles of Industry 4.0 applied to the healthcare and life science industry.

The foundations have been identified in the convergence of technological developments in three areas of industrial interest: advanced materials, advanced automation and ICT.

The target is the identification of ways leading to the loss of waste status and the transformation into new valuable raw materials..

MWT4.0 consists of integrated prototypes that create a smart factory system which affects the entire life cycle of medical waste: from waste production in clinics, operating blocks, wards, to its collection and sorting, until it ceases to be waste and becomes new raw material or secondary solid fuel. 3D printing and Cisa Group: a new perspective applied to the sterilisation process industry

After tests with its first 3D printer and the study of biodegradable and eco-friendly materials, Cisa Group went from making prototypes to producing small finished parts for use within its sterilization technologies.

The company then decided to implement the use of a professional printer and high-quality filaments.

We conducted studies and research. We distinguished materials by selecting those with the best technical, mechanical, chemical and thermal features” says Gabriele Lucchesi, Technical Mechanical Department, Cisa Group.
“This allows us to produce fully customisable parts in a short time. Components can have new layouts that are unthinkable with conventional production methods. All this allows us to improve performance by continuously optimising our technologies for the healthcare industry and our solutions for life science”, concludes Gabriele.
Cisa Group invests heavily in research and development, and Cisa Research keeps a watchful eye on the future of infection control. Innovation and material development also allow us to look to the future by identifying new elements that can bring significant benefits and advantages in sterilization process applications.
